Another woman, Mistress Robert Murray, also outwitted the Redcoats by detaining them at their house, giving Old Putnam and his men time to escape. She and her daughters were charming and perhaps they entertained General Howe and his men with this nonsense song, Jennie Jenkins.

The End of the War

The World Turned Upside Down is an English ballad. It first appeared in the 1640s as a protest against the policies of Parliament under Cromwell who banned the traditional English celebrations of Christmas. They thought the holiday should be a solemn occasion.

According to some accounts, the British army band, under Lord Cornwallis, played the tune when they surrendered at Yorktown. A rag tag army defeating the greatest military power in the world at the time certainly made it appear the world had turned upside down!
